Food and beverages may be purchased student/staff card, or ordered in advance via the MyMonitor online platform. Instructions for accessing MyMonitor and adding value to accounts can be found on the Parent IT Services page. There are two Point of Sale registers operated by the Catering staff to facilitate transactions.
The MyMonitor platform allows parents to order food in advance, top up their account balance, monitor purchases and flag dietary requirements. There are two separate food/beverage offers; one for Hillingdon, and one for Fiona and the Senior school. All patrons of the Dining Room are required to use Ascham ID cards for transactions due to the cards being safer than cash, more convenient, and for speedier service.
The menus are designed with health and wellbeing foremost in mind. The weekly menu is distributed via email to staff during the week prior, uploaded to the Hub and also to Monitor.
The Catering Department has adopted the guidelines from the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy to prescribe the food/beverage offer to ensure that the catering is fresh and healthy. Further information may be found here: https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/heal/Pages/food-drink-criteria.aspx
Fresh, dry and frozen produce is purchased by the Catering team from a variety of suppliers to ensure that the best produce is sourced at the best price. There is a four week rotation of menus which is adjusted pending feedback received and seasonality
Feedback is solicited via surveys and client-facing conversations, regular meetings with Heads of Department and boarding parents. Surveys and feedback from staff and students is a valuable tool to track perceptions, suggestions and current performance.
Additionally, there is an informal mechanism for providing feedback through verbal and email reports directly to the Catering Department. Feedback provided directly to the Catering Department is promptly acknowledged and any issues investigated within three working days. Results of investigations are reported back to the initiator.
Ascham School has in place a comprehensive Food Safety Plan. The safety of students and staff who have specific allergies to certain food types is of utmost importance to the Ascham School Catering Department. The Catering Department in conjunction with the Head Nurse and Nutritionist have devised the following plan to ensure the safety of all concerned.
The prevalence of nut allergies amongst students has resulted in Ascham School becoming a Nut Free Campus. No nuts are to be purchased or used by the Catering Department and no student, visitor, teacher or administration person is permitted to bring nuts on to campus.
The parents of students with specific allergies are responsible for advising the School of their child’s specific allergy(ies), and their child’s management plan. The School Nurse is responsible for collating and maintaining this information and communicating the information to the Catering Department on a term by term basis prior to the commencement of the term, or more frequently as updated information comes to hand.
The Catering Department is responsible for identifying products which contain items that may cause allergic reactions from consumers i.e. lactose (dairy), gluten, fish, eggs, and crustaceans. Allergens are clearly listed on each publication of the menus beneath the dish.
The Food Act 2003 (NSW) requires certain food businesses in the NSW hospitality and retail food service sector to have at least one trained Food Safety Supervisor (FSS). The Catering Department ensures that at least one staff member per shift has a current Food Safety Supervisor certificate, and that the practices of the Food Safety Plan are being actively followed.
