Prep

Vi et Animo Program

As the first year of schooling at Ascham, the Prep environment is warm, nurturing and welcoming. At the heart of the wellbeing program, is the rapport established between teachers and Prep students, as well as the connection between the School and the home environment. From the commencement of Prep, students are introduced to the Learning Buddy system. This involves each Prep student getting to know a new student each day. The Learning Buddy system builds students’ ability to cooperate and learn with others. Students are encouraged to get to know every student in their class.

Students are introduced to the weekly social skill, using one of the You Can Do It puppets; Connie Confidence, Ricky Resilience, Oscar Organisation, Pete Persistence and Gabby Get-Along. Social skills are taught in an explicit manner and are reinforced through role-plays and the puppets.

Prep students also actively explore the School values, discussing and describing ways in which they can display: Acceptance, Ambition, Collaboration, Community, Courage, Kindness, Resilience, Respect and Responsibility. Friendly Schools Plus sessions, facilitated by the PDHPE staff, involve explicit learning experiences to develop students’ socio-emotional competencies. During these lessons, the students develop and practise important understandings and skills.
