Ascham Selection Policy

Ascham Snowsports aims to promote and encourage participation in the sports of skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing within the school and to create a sense of community. At all levels of competition, we expect our representatives to compete fairly and conduct themselves appropriately, demonstrating good sportsmanship at all times.

All girls and parents are reminded that the Interschools competition is a team event so priority is to the Ascham team, not the individual.

The school’s aim is to field our best teams at all levels of competition. The primary measure of success will be the overall performance of the school at these events.

The Snowsports coordinator will be responsible for team selection. The final decision on all selections will rest with the Snowsports Coordinator and the Head of Sport.

The following criteria will be used for selection:

Regional championships

For each event, the Snowsports Coordinator will rank the girls in the order they estimate they will finish on the day. Teams (and start positions within the team) are allocated strictly on the basis of that ranking. The aim of selections for the Regional Championships is to give the maximum number of girls the best possible chance of advancing to the State Championships.

Teams and running order will be selected on the following factors:

  • Previous Interschools Results
  • Previous results in other snowsports races/competitions
  • Any other relevant factors brought to the attention of the Snowsports Co-ordinator

Where a participant’s ability is unknown, best efforts will be made to place her correctly so as to give the team the best advantage of reaching the State Championships. These results will be discussed and approved by the Head of Sport prior to entries being submitted online.

NSW State Championships and Australian National Championships

Ascham teams who finish in the top five places and individuals who finish in the top 10 places at the Regional Championships will qualify for the State Championships. Teams who finish in the top six places and individuals who finish in the top 15 places at the State Championships will qualify for the National Championships.

If an Ascham team qualifies for the next level of the competition, the principle is that the School’s team has qualified, not the individual girls who made up that team. Therefore, the Snowsports Coordinator will re-rank the girls as follows:

  • Teams and running order will be selected primarily from results at the Regional Championships and also the State Championships for National selection.
  • The Snowsports Co-ordinator may use their discretion to alter this ranking when a known more competitive athlete posts a slow time (or no time) at the previous level of competition due to a fall, slip or disqualification or because she is racing while injured or unwell. This discretion also applies to a girl who is unable to compete at the previous level of competition due to illness/injury. It is important to note that for a racer to compete to the best of her ability and aim for the best possible result, she must be able to risk falling and not posting a time (or posting a slow time). There should be an understanding from all parents and girls that such selection changes will only occur when the Snowsports Co-ordinator believes that it is in the best interests of the team.
  • The Interschool rules state that teams cannot make more than two changes from Regional team to State team and
one change from State team to National team

Parent Volunteers

At the interschools races, each school is required to provide parent volunteers to fulfill course official duties such as gate keeping, marshalling and recording.

One official is required for every 8 entries that a school enters in a Championship.

Volunteers must be 19 years or older and cannot be a student at a competing school. It is advisable that you do not volunteer on the same course where you are also a team manager. No previous experience is necessary. There is no need to be a strong skier/ boarder to help. Non-skiers can also help.

Parents are encouraged to complete the online training course on the Interschools website. The course can be taken at any time before volunteers will be officiating at an Interschools event. The training course has lessons in five main categories:

  • An introduction to Interschools, its role in competitive snow sports and who manages the competition
  • Key roles of the Resort Race Department at the Interschools events
  • Interschools Course Officials roles and responsibilities
  • Identifying the various types of incorrect gate passage
  • Mogul, Slopestyle and Cross-Country officials’ roles and responsibilities
  • Volunteer event preparation

Course Officials

Course officials must complete an online waiver form before they volunteer.
Check in:
Course officials must check into the Interschools event office at least 30-45 minutes prior to the course inspection time. Course officials are required at the top of each course 10 minutes prior to the stated inspection time. After you have finished your volunteer’s duties on course, you will need to make sure that the folder and vest are returned to the Interschools event office.
Volunteer Tips:
Please be prepared for all weather conditions when you are volunteering on our courses and make sure you have appropriate clothing options for all conditions.Gate keepers can be the most exposed to the elements and will be standing or sitting down for the duration of the course. You will be required to write notes in this position, therefore please bring either inner gloves or similar which you can write with. We encourage all Course Officials to bring a small backpack when you are scheduled on course to carry your course official material.

Team Managers

Team managers will be nominated for each team.

It is the responsibility of the team manager to:

  • Collect team bibs from Ascham staff members at the relevant time communicated by the Snowsports coordinator.
  • Contact all team members to organise collection of Bibs from team manager.
  • Communicate with team to ensure they know the time and location of their race
  • Ensure team is at the race marshalling area on time
  • Ensure all team members are visibly wearing the correct uniform and event bib number which has been assigned to them
  • Undertake course inspection with the team and provide guidance on the course. The course is open for inspection for 30 minutes prior to the start of the first race run. Competitors must wear their helmet and bibs and only side slip through the course for inspection.
  • Make sure team members understand the Interschools Rules of Competition and in particular the course procedures. For example, what competitors do if they are interfered with on the course.
  • Assist racers to be on time to the marshalling area for their second run
  • Keep students warm and carry jackets to the bottom of the course

Discounted tickets for Team Managers are only offered at Thredbo. They are only available as one day tickets (even when team managers are in the role over multiple days). They can only be purchased at the resort ticketing offices.

Snow ID

All students are required to obtain a SnowID to register for races. This is an initiative of Snow Australia. The ID has 3 main functions:

• Free membership of Snow Australia, which provides, among other benefits, insurance cover during participation in on-snow events
• Allowing students to be entered into the Interschool Championships and other events
• Login to an App that features live timing when an event is running

If your daughter does not yet have a SnowID please register here.

Leave

Students skiing at this level are granted leave for two days prior to their events. One day is a travel day and the second day is for training. In the case of the National Championships, students will be permitted three days leave due to the extended travel required. Leave greater than this will not be granted. The Ascham Sports Department will submit leave for the students who are registered.
