Program Information and Levels

Gym Skills

Recreation: Prep to Year 2

This fun program enables the students to explore the fundamental skills and movement of Gymnastics in a non-competitive and safe environment under the guidance of qualified coaches. The focus is on developing the correct techniques of rotation, swing, balance and tumbling foundation skills along with Dance skills and hand-eye coordination required for Artistic Gymnastics.

Junior and Senior Recreation: Years 3–12

Students participating in this program will have an emphasis on tumbling and acrobatic skills, whilst also having fun experiencing the collaboration of team gym. The focus of this program will be on increasing their confidence, strength and flexibility, which helps to provide a solid foundation for any sports-based activity.

Foundation Squads

The focus of this program is to increase Foundation skills. Students will focus on enhancing strength, flexibility and further develop skill techniques. Students will also be introduced to skill sequencing, and competition performance in preparation for their first phase of competition at school, club and invitational events at Level 1 and 2.

Development: White and Blue Squads (by invitation only)

This is a selective program for those girls who have demonstrated potential through a high standard of foundation skills, strength and flexibility.
The focus of this squad is to develop strong movement patterns to extend foundation skills and to further enhance skill techniques and sequencing.

Talent: Red Squads (by invitation only)

Students selected for these squads have already shown a high standard of the foundation skills, strength, flexibility, and proficiency across all apparatus. The focus will be on skill techniques and competition performance for Levels 3 and over which includes the development of routines. Once routines are proficient, students in this squad will be eligible for competition at invitational, Regional, State and National events.

Grading

Prior to the commencement of the Levels 1 to 4 competition season, students are given the opportunity to attend a grading session. Grading provides the students with an opportunity to experience performing their skills in a competition environment and to gain feedback about their progress from the coaches and judges. This process will equip the students with the confidence to enter future events and to understand the banding system.

In recent years NSW Gymnastics adopted the banding system to increase participation and encourage gymnasts.

At competition events for Levels 1 to 4, 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall awards are no longer awarded. The gymnast’s overall band is determined by their overall score and is awarded a Gold, Silver or Bronze band depending on where their score sits in the score range as seen below.

Bronze: overall point score is less than 32
Silver: overall point score is 32 – 35.99
Gold: overall point score is 36 and over

Competitions

Ascham Gymnastics Club requires a standard of skill to be performed. This will be determined by each skill being judged at a skills testing (see dates in the calendar). To pass, an average score of 8.0 needs to be attained on each apparatus. Once the gymnast has achieved this score for each aparatus required in her level the routines can be learned.
All girls have the opportunity to enter competition. The following criteria applies:

State and National competition, Level 3 and over

Girls who wish to compete at this level of competition will be required to train at least two sessions per week for Levels 3-6 and a minimum of 3 sessions per week for Levels 7 and over. In addition to this term training girls who wish to be competitive are asked to continue training throughout the holiday period unless on vacation. The girls will be required to compete in approximately 5 to 6 events per year.

Regional and local invitational competition, all Levels

For those Artistic gymnasts who can only commit to one training session per week are still eligible to compete. Foundation levels will only be required to compete locally or within the Inner City Region. Levels 3 and over may compete in local or regional invitational competitions. All girls are eligible to compete at the Ascham Gymnastics Championships.

IPSHA and IGSA Eligibility and Selection Policy

To be eligible to compete at IGSSA or IPSHA, gymnasts must participate in the Ascham Gymnastics Club annual Gymnastics Championships in Term 3. Students who participate in alternative gymnastic programs outside Ascham are still eligible to compete at the Ascham Gymnastics Championships to be selected for either the IGSSA or IPSHA events. If selected these students will be asked to participate in some training sessions at Ascham Gymnastics Club so they can familiarise themselves with their team members and coaches in preparation for the event.

Rhythmic Gymnastics Multiples for Competition

Program Overview

Each group can consist of 2, 3 or 4 gymnasts working collaboratively together subject to eligibility criteria as stated in the 2019 GNSW Rhythmic Gymnastics Technical Handbook.

A multiples routine is defined by cooperative work where each gymnast enters into a relationship with an apparatus and one or more partners.

Eligibility Criteria

Gymnasts in Level 6 and over Development and over are eligible to participate in Multiples. A group will only be formulated providing the adequate number of girls in the correct age group and/or division are compatible in height, ability and training times. Once this has been determined, gymnasts will be notified by the Head Coach as to which multiple combinations Ascham will develop and put forward in 2019.

Competition Pathway

Development
Students working in this group would have already shown a high standard of individual skills and shown they can work autonomously. They will primarily focus on mastering apparatus skills pursuant to division requirements.

Competition Development
Students working in this group have already mastered the collaborative skills required for their division category. They will now be introduced to the sequencing of skills and choreography. These groups will perform at inter-club or regional events at the discretion of the Head Coach.

Competition Squad
Students working in this group will primarily focus on developing consistent collaborative performances of the group routine.

Once competent, groups will be notified by the Head Coach to attend various inter-club or regional or state or national competition events.

Competition structure, eligibility and Selection Policy

Ascham Gymnastics Club requires a standard of skill to be performed. This will be determined by each skill being judged at a skills testing (See dates in the calendar). To pass a skill an average score of 8.50 needs to be attained. Once the gymnast has achieved this score for all skills required in her level the routines can be learned.

Gymnasts compete at various NSW qualifying events throughout the competition season trying to achieve a qualifying score that will be determined in 2018 by Gymnastics NSW. This enables them to be eligible to compete at the State championships. As Ascham Gymnastics Club sets a high standard only those girls who compete consistently above the qualifying standard throughout the season will be eligible. This will be determined by the Head of Gymnastics.

IPSHA and IGSSA Eligibility and Selection Policy

Artistic and RG

To be eligible to compete at IGSSA or IPSHA, gymnasts must participate in the Ascham Gymnastics Club annual Gymnastics Championships in Term 3. Students who participate in alternative gymnastic programs outside Ascham are still eligible to compete at the Ascham Gymnastics Championships to be selected for either the IGSSA or IPSHA events. If selected these students will be asked to participate in some training sessions at Ascham Gymnastics Club so they can familiarise themselves with their team members and coaches in preparation for the event.
