Year 1 | Term 4, 2025 | Term Overview

Welcome back to another exciting term of learning in Year 1. The information below will outline the Term 4 curriculum and provide some useful information about the term ahead.

English

Throughout Term 4, the students will be encouraged to develop their speaking and listening skills further by presenting an oral talk about a chosen living thing.

In InitiaLit lessons, students will continue to consolidate their phonemic knowledge. Students will have extensive opportunities to reinforcement the taught ck rule and the  FLoSS rule. Further exploration of different suffixes and the introduction of a prefix will be applied to words. New trigraphs and contractions will be introduced throughout the term as well as multi-syllable words.  They will complete targeted activities to practise reading and spelling words with all introduced sounds and tricky words (non-regular spelling), including reading and writing sentences to develop fluency and automaticity.

In Grammar lessons this term, the students will consolidate their understanding of nouns, proper nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and plurals. Students will consolidate their understanding of sentence writing including when, where and who phrases. They will be revising how to punctuate sentences correctly and using question marks, speech marks and commas, both in their sentence writing and text writing.

Along with the home and Storybook Comprehension readers, we will read a range of imaginative (fiction) and informative (non-fiction) texts in the classroom and during InitiaLit storybook lessons. Focused lessons will support the development of essential comprehension skills such as making connections, predicting, questioning and visualising as well as applying new vocabulary.

Each week, the students will complete a writing activity based on an informative or imaginative texts. With guidance, the students will go through the writing process of planning, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. The writing tasks will be linked to themes being taught in other Key Learning Areas, e.g. writing a procedure for planting a tomato plant and writing a tourist pamphlet.

In Term 4, the students will continue to focus on consolidating the NSW Foundation Style Handwriting. Their handwriting will focus on using correct letter formation, size and shape, with each letter sitting on the baseline and using this handwriting style in all written activities.

Mathematics

In Term 4, the Year 1 students will continue to consolidate and extend existing skills and strategies in the areas of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Space, and Statistics and Probability. Each week the students will continue to work through some Quick Maths questions (e.g. addition to 20) and some Maths Mentals questions to develop automaticity in their speed of recall and widen their mathematical vocabulary.

Throughout the term, students will focus on developing their ability to use a variety of representations to formulate and express mathematical ideas or make connections to other mathematical concepts. There continues to be a focus on thinking logically, critically and creatively.

Problem solving, and the ability to work mathematically, forms an important part of every Maths lesson. The students will be encouraged to demonstrate the mathematical processes of communicating, understanding and fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Weekly Matific tasks will be set for homework to consolidate taught concepts and to provide revision at home.

In Science this term, students will continue to develop their scientific and technological skills, as well as their knowledge and understanding of Living Things. The students will consolidate their understanding of living things and their potential to reproduce. Our focus this term will be on how their offspring grow and develop through a series of stages. Students will begin to understand that, although a development pattern is predictable for most animals, each kind of living thing has a unique sequence of life stages. By consolidating their knowledge of the external features of a variety of living things and understanding life stages, students will gain an appreciation of the diversity that exists among living things. Students will record changes in the growth of a plant, keeping a growth and change diary of a tomato plant.

In Digital Technologies, students will continue to investigate algorithms with the Dash and Dot robot as they further develop their computational thinking skills. They will apply their understanding and skills of coding the Dash and Dot for a small project that links to other areas of their learning.

There will be further opportunities for the girls to apply their learning whilst studying the Great Barrier Reef environment as well as recognising links between features on maps and in photographs. Students will also be supported to understand how spaces are used throughout The Great Barrier Reef and the need to preserve the environment.
