All students must have working Anti-Virus installed on their laptops, regardless of whether they use a Windows or Mac device. You can install your own purchased Anti-Virus, or you can download Free Sophos Anti-Virus by going to https://home.sophos.com/en-us/download-antivirus-pc.aspx to download and install the PC or Mac version of either the free or premium version of Sophos Home.

Please find below the user guide to help you with your query. If the guide you are seeking is not there, or you have a suggestion for a new guide – please contact the IT Help Desk at helpdesk@ascham.nsw.edu.au

Removing Malware and Trojans from a Windows Laptop

  • Download and install the software. During installation, when prompted, untick all options except for Main files and Download updates immediately
  • It is important that you close every open browser like Chrome, Safari or Firefox before continuing
  • Run Spybot from the Start menu or Desktop and click the Next button to skip through the tutorial
  • Click Search for updates > choose any mirror > Continue > Download.  Spybot will restart.  Now click Check for problems
  • The scan can take up to 10 minutes.  Fix any infections once prompted at the end and restart your computer

  • It is important that you Quit (command Q) every open browser like Chrome, Safari or Firefox before continuing

Internet Security/Ransomware/Phishing Emails

  • Phishing emails try to gain unauthorised access to your personal data and information by appearing to be from legitimate sources. There are some ways to distinguish between authentic and scam emails however. Whenever you receive an email asking you to clock on a link, attachment, or ask you to take some other sort of action you should check the host name (the part of the address after the @ symbol) to confirm it is genuine. For example: @commbank.com.au (legitimate) versus @commbank.com or @commbank.freehost.com.au
  • Scam emails often use ‘Dear customer’ or whatever is before the @ symbol in your email address (e.g Dear polly.bloggs) and may include various spelling and grammatical mistakes throughout the email.
  • The biggest issue with scam emails are the links within the email that they encourage you to click on. Even though a word may be formatted as a hyperlink you can discover where it will take you by hovering the cursor over the link. You can try it on this Commbank example www.commbank.com.au. Notice in the bottom left hand corner of your browser that the link will not take you to www.commbank.com.au.
  • Note that no legitimate organisation will expect you to divulge personal details, banking usernames and passwords or other website credentials via email or phone.
  • If you are in doubt, please email helpdesk@ascham.nsw.edu.au before clicking anything.

Reporting Bad Ads with Inappropriate Images

  • Ad categories not permitted on Educational applications hosted online include, but aren’t limited to: adult content, suggestive imagery, tobacco, alcohol, drugs, dating, gambling, firearms, weapons, illegal or fraudulent content, and counterfeit goods.
  • Unfortunately, an ad in one of these categories may occasionally slip past preventative measures.
  • Software providers take these occurrences seriously and act quickly to remove the ad and prevent others like it from appearing in the future.
Report Bad Ads
  • If you see an ad that falls into any of these categories or is otherwise offensive, please tell your teacher immediately and report it via email to helpdesk@ascham.nsw.edu.au with the following:
  • Email Subject: Reporting Bad Ad
  • A screenshot or brief description of the ad’s image
  • Text appearing on the ad
  • The ad’s URL
  • Right-click on the ad to copy the link address.
  • The page URL where you saw the ad.
