Senior School Choirs

The Senior School at Ascham offers a number of opportunities for students to be in involved in our extensive choral program. In some instances entry is by audition only, while other groups are open to all willing participants. We are very fortunate that most of our choir rehearsals take place during the school day, without impacting upon the girls’ lesson timetable.

Junior Choir

The Junior Choir is a large group of around one hundred students from Years 7 to 9. The choir rehearses on Thursdays in the Packer Theatre from 11.55am to 12.55pm. Entry is open to all, although girls are expected to undergo a short voice placement test to ascertain which vocal part would be most appropriate. The Junior Choir performs in the annual Choral Concert, the Music Camp Concert and the Christmas Concert. All members are expected to attend all rehearsals and performances as well as the three day Music Camp in Term 2.

Senior Choir

The Senior Choir is a large group of around one hundred students from Years 10 to 12. The choir rehearses on Wednesdays in the Packer Theatre from 11.55am to 12.55pm. Entry is open to all, although girls are expected to undergo a short voice placement test to ascertain which vocal part would be most appropriate. The Senior Choir performs in the annual Choral Concert, the Music Camp Concert and the Christmas Concert. All members are expected to attend all rehearsals and performances as well as the three day Music Camp in Term 2. Please note, it is an expectation that Year 12 students continue to attend rehearsals throughout Term 3.

Madrigal Groups

Ascham offers girls the opportunity to join smaller, more specialised ensembles. There are three of these ‘madrigal groups’, each rehearsing on Fridays at lunchtime. Entry to these choirs is by audition only and a more advanced level of music literacy and sight reading skills is advantageous. There are currently around 20 members in each group. Piccoline is open to students from Years 7 and 8. Voxia is open to students from Years 9 and 10. Canzona is open to students from Years 11 and 12. These groups are re-auditioned in the middle of the year to minimise the impact of the departure of Year 12 girls.
